Perspective

Every year on the first day of school I have my students give me some information about themselves by completing what I call a “get to know you” card. Each student is given a 3x5” note card and specific instructions what to write on it. This practice is pretty common among American teachers, but I’m pretty sure this was a new experience for my students in Ghana this week.

Beyond the routine questions such as the student’s name, birthday, home town, and their plans after high school, I also asked the students to list three positive characteristics about Ghana (since, as I told them, “I’m new to your country so what good things would you like me to know”). In addition, I asked them to list two or three ideas about the US that they have heard but aren’t sure if they are true.

Here are their unedited responses (the number in parenthesis is the number if times that answer was given):

I agree with so many of the student comments on Ghana - the people are so kind and generous and caring! While I was there, teachers cooked dishes for us, drove us all around town and back and forth to appointments, called and visited just to talk or check in on us, visited us daily in the hospitals; the time they took to get to know us and take care of us was endless!
I also noticed how hard so many people worked, whether they were selling roasted plantains on the roadside, or sewing clothing in 95 degree heat, or studying for classes during "free time", or pounding cassava for fufu for dinner. The mentality is very self-sufficient - if you want something, you work for it.
On the comments and questions about America, I can see how many of these ideas might come through the movies and news from the US, but a couple themes really surprised me. Satanism is prevalent in our culture? Obama is the last president before a judgment day?
And several comments were very interesting insights on American culture: discipline problems, war rhetoric, government social programs, education practices, views of Africans/African-Americans, work opportunities, etc. I wonder what an American high school class would do with this list? Or how their own list would look?
